Description
Esquel is located in the eastern foothills of the Andes in the Patagonian Province of Chubut. It is the largest town (~30,000 population) and the commercial and livestock center in the area. The towns founding dates back to the arrival of Welsh immigrants in Chubut in 1865. The settlement was created on 25 February 1906.
Esquel is the Southern terminus of the narrow-gauge 2-ft 5.5 inches (750 mm) 'La Trochita', known as 'The Old Patagian Express' made famous by Paul Theroux's book of that title. Construction started after WW I at Ingeniero Jacobacci, Rio Negro Province and eventually extended to Esquel, Chubut Province, a distance of 402 km. It first reached Esquel in 1945. The official name of the rail was 'Viejo Expreso Patagonico'.
It operated between Ingeniero Jacobacci and Esquel until 1993 and the train now operates as a tourist excursion between Esquel and the small settlement of Nahuel Pan with other services to El Maiten. At the time of my visit it operated once a week.

Wonderful shot!
I really love all these shots of this area of Argentina. You have let me travel from my armchair and given me a sense of the atmosphere of this sparsely populated area. Thank you.
I agree with Katherine. I like the fact I can travel without the stress!
