Description
Monterey was the capital of Alta California under both Spain and Mexico. It was the only place of entry for taxable goods in California. In 1846 the U.S. flag was raised over the customs house, and California became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War.
Until the 1950s there was an abundant fishery. I like to just hang around the harbor and listen to the sea lions bark, or drive around the peninsula through Pacific Grove and watch an occasional sea otter cracking shell fish while floating on its back, or look at the oddly twisted Monterey Pines or Cypress Trees along the rocky coast.
Just absorb the atmosphere and try to envision what it must have been in the first half of the 20th century when it was a major fishing port with canneries and John Steinbeck's characters lived here, and in Watsonville, Salinas, or Carmel.

It is sad when a fishery declines
Very true what Andrea stated. Wonderful capture
A lovely capture and it still sounds to be a great place to spend some time. ☺
I walk the same path and loved the town, home of one of the most prestigious car shows in the USA
