This is so lovely!

Nancy spoke of seeing this tree in person---I've written stories where people come across trees like this. But you've actually created one. Carol, I've not commented hardly at all, the last few weeks, as I've had too much discomfort; but I came here again, after my turtle comment, to tell you how consummate and exquisite an artist you are. You're in your prime with a capital P, and it's just thrilling to watch.

This is both a highly painterly tree, yet also a very visceral tree, painted on a very visceral surface. Saying "it feels 2 dimensional" gives all the wrong impressions. Point is, we feel the surface here; we feel it so much we want to touch it, run our hands along it, even walk on it. It's like a collage of many hearts and objects that you've pasted onto the surface; and it's teeming. Yet it's painted. The trunk is a big swirling mass, with colonies of swirls---towns, villages, sub-sets of swirls. Which all make their way to the top, where that valentine-heart-teeming-bouquet breaks loose. (And you have a few hearts emerging out of the trunk too. I don't want to forget those.) The leaf area is chock full of jewel-like presences, very tactile. And you have deep of layers, very physical, with your darker hues beneath the brighter hues (the greens beneath the reds, in the leaves, for instance). You create lots of pearl-like incandescence, in this style. And, having journeyed our way up from the trunk into the heart-leaves, we then cascade down in falls of yellow-greens, pinks, pale sculpted rushing hues made of sky and plant essences. The light hues on the far right---punctuated by your hearts---is wonderful balance to the deeper hues on the left. The painting moves up, explodes, then down, then back up again...Even the background is filled with surges and rushing lines. Rapids are everywhere.

A lushly beautiful image, with the passion of love woven into it; and it suits your delicate poem perfectly. Even with one hue---red---you get a whole world of variations. But there are lots of hues in each shape. It's as if we're looking into a tide-pool of bubbling lives. Terrific. It's wonderful to see all you're doing now---alcohol-based and otherwise. Your most recent piece (the wisteria) cemented, for me, that you're in a deep prodigious 'mastery' period. They just keep coming. I wanted to comment on the hyacinths too and on and on, but for now I'll say bravo to this, and I hope this gushing period you're in now never abates.

Thanks so much, Mark, for your wonderful comment on this artwork. Can't really tell you how much I appreciate your observations and visions, and you humble me with your praise. To say you inspire me to keep working, expressing, and challenging myself as an artist would be a massive understatement. You really see beyond what is on the surface of each creation, into the very heart and soul of it. Always amazes and thrills me. It's interesting that you once wrote about a love tree, as I have, too. Years ago I wrote a novel that had a kissing tree, and when the lovers stood beneath it they had to kiss every time a leaf fell. And, of course, carve their initials in a heart on the trunk. I think this love tree is an extension of that tree, only with heart-shaped leaves. And it is fun to bring it to life in a visual way. I am such a tree person, as I've always loved their uniqueness, beauty, and strength. They are the survivors, living through the ages, and they have a story to tell. Even the ones that have fallen, as they continue to leave their mark on this world. And I never seem to tire of telling their stories through my art.
