This is for Mark (wysiwig).
Ok. The image is based on Mark's upload, Simple Elegance. It’s a church-door from Iceland. Of the teeming riches of Mark’s gallery, I chose this because Mark has the most disarming way, a ‘simple elegance’ that pulls you in no matter what he’s sharing, what wisdom, wit, history, folklore, and so on. All you Mark fans will agree: He shares incredible heart and mind with absolute grace. Thus, my choice of image...
So: I drew the door, straightened it (for montage), then stuck it in the top-left. (View this from left to right, row by row.)
Then---to feebly capture the breadth of Mark’s travels---I transformed the door 35 times---making 36 total! I had a whale of a time finding something appropriate for Mark’s scope: I couldn’t find anything. So I chose an entryway, and hope it conveys my feelings.
Mark’’s presently posting his great Havana series, but he's posted from all over. Here’s how I see it: He goes across the globe. He absorbs their history and humanity, their sufferings and hopes. Then he lets them grow in his deep, receptive soul. He finds connections, perspectives, tales, memories of incredible people...He then finds the right photographs, and he posts. And his photos aren’t just illustrations for his words: He’s a terrific photographer. He’s got a tremendous eye for composition, beauty, hue, revelation, human experience...Look at his shots of Nepal. Or Arches National Park. Or his street shots. Or nature shots...
And (nope, not done yet) he shares everything from Buddhist wisdom to counter-culture cartoonists, to Native American lore, to Jewish wisdom...And there’s not an ounce of pretense in it, nor a sense that he’s trying to show ‘erudition’: His words spring from nothing but love, for his subject and for his listeners. And that's true of his comments too...
As for “36”:
The Jewish sages said each community is kept afloat by “36 wise souls” (Lamed Vav in Hebrew.) And these souls aren’t ‘famous’---they just 'are'. So I made 36 versions of this door to celebrate Mark’s lamed-vav-ness. I appreciate his offerings more than I can say; and I consider his gallery a treasure.

Since Mark had a birthday in October, I---the master of great timing---celebrate it in December! But it doesn’t matter: I bow to your wonderful humanity, Mark, to your breadth of mind and heart, your sense of history and how we’re all connected, and your understanding of our foibles and our pain. Above all, to your wisdom and sense of the Dance of Life. You’ve made a treasure-chest here; and I’m way grateful to be one of its recipients. May you continue stoking that Rabbinical legend, and making our time here much richer, funnier and more humane as a result. With countless blessings and thank you's for all you do, the other Mark

what a great dedi to Mark. the narrow doors are similar to some I repaired that dated from the 16th century Europe.

Oh, I love this for Mark! You've taken something deceptively simple and layered it with meaning and intention, story and song, wisdom and humor, connection and synthesis. Starting at the beginning, you've told a tale of an unfolding story. As the details are revealed, more and more is gathered in and made whole. I particularly like the feeling of the third row. There seems to be more to it than meets the eye, which is very Mark-like in its vibe. At the end of the story, you are never left wondering what it was about. He has the organization of a writer and the love of a poet. He takes us on journey after journey, and shares his travel experiences with a bit of intimacy, a bit of humor, a bit of culture and a load of acceptance of what he finds. I've had the great pleasure of spending a day with Mark, and I can tell you that he's one of the easiest people in the world to be around. He has a quiet peacefulness about him, and a lovely energy that asks nothing but that the day unfolds as it will.
I always look forward to not only his art and his stories, but to his comments as well. As I go through the galleries looking at images, I also scan the comments. Anything Mark says is worth stopping to read. He invariably has something thoughtful or witty or profound to add to any discussion.

Holy cow, Mark! Why don’t you tell us how you really feel? This is such a surprise and delight. As I am not used to receiving such praise it is very much appreciated. And since I also tend to get all ba-humbuggy and a little depressed around this time of year I have to tell you that this has given a wonderful boost to my mood. Thank you, Mark, for this incredible gift. You obviously put a lot of work into it and it really shows.

This is definitely a formidable piece of work, and I can study and admire it for many hours, add to it all your wonderful words, and your way of describing everything so intense, I have not enough words. At the top, the most right 'door', this alone I would like to see a larger picture of. Now it is a part of the great whole. But imagine, my friend, we were able to zoom even larger what we can now, how more impressive this all would be. It is extraordinary, really, and nothing 'simple', as you wrote in your title, dear friend. btw, a big excuse for my lack of comments, as also I so long have the intense to answer your so lovely s.m. his words is spot on and his work is wonderful to you. as you age so do wisdom comes to you. That is if you kept the Living Words of the Torahs or what the rest of the world say the Ten Commitments.

Wow Mark, this looks amazing. How you could make a simple door look so amazingly different so many times and then combine them into this wonderful collage with its great colors is fabulous. Very impressive work and I'm sure the other Mark will be delighted just as I have been.
There is a lot to see here, all the variations of theme on each door. Fantastic work and creativity.
This needs to be a true 'installation', something we could walk through and become imbued with the nuances of each iteration...your work, my friend, is revelatory!
