Description

Cuckoo Wasp - this one "Chrysis angolensis" is so named because is mimics the behavior or the cuckoo bird that lays its egg in another bird's nest. The chick, being much larger than the other chicks, then gets the majority the food that the parent brings. In the case of the Cuckoo Wasp, the newly hatched young simply devours the larvae of the host bees surrounding it. Taken April '14. Detail will be better in zoom. Thanks very much for your views and comments.

What really got me with this image, is the absolutely fantastic clarity and detail! Well done! I really like the colours and the awesome contrast of the wasp with the lilac!

Insects! Ah...I love 'em. Cuckoo wasps...I've never seen them live and in person, and so this duo of shots is quite a treat. I've been reading up on wasps lately, since discovering that quite a few of them have "domesticated" viruses that infect their prey, all for the benefit of wasp appetites. Nature is such a stunning, pragmatic thing. These shots capture that. What a gorgeous creature!

It's so pretty! I've never seen anything like that, that I'm aware of, at least. What lovely shots!

Fine focus, bokeh and texture in this dual image of the Cuckoo Wasp, an insect species alien to my knowledge, Maria.
