Description
I said my goodbyes to Elder Borzea and drove back to Highway 70 headed for the town of Moab and Arches National Park. Highway 70 may be one of the loneliest roads in the United States. At one point I saw a sign which read “Next facilities 100 miles”. Most of the time I was the only one on the road.
Arches sits atop an underground salt bed. This salt bed is thousands of feet thick in places, and was deposited some 300 million years ago when a shallow sea flowed into the area and eventually evaporated. Over the next 100 million years this salt bed was overlaid with sandstone brought by wind and water. Over 5000 feet (1500 meters) of these sediments were deposited and have been mostly eroded away. Remnants of the cover exist as the spires, fins and arches we see today.
I arrived at Moab in the late afternoon and almost immediately saw the famous arches.

Hehe! You are a great story teller, Mark.
Mark, I have to thank you for the laugh I got out of this. Excellent and you must tell them to go easy on the salt !

Thank you very much for the great gut-buster laugh!!! Very good capture -
Well, it wasn't quite what you expected, nor did I - you didn't really need to travel far ... hmmm, but can you get Matzo dumpling soup there ? or Cannoli ? ;)) So interesting, the story of sandstone development - I would have loved, to have an abode totally built from sandstone, safe journey - for sure, and not much traffic ... BB
LOL! I'll look forward to more. :P
