Description
I've started culling through photos I took in France a few years ago & found some that I had overlooked the first time. This is what looks like a very old door we ran across in Montmartre one night. Who knows how many centuries of history have played out in front of this door?

lovely - perhaps one of the parisians like Cyve can tell you more about it :-)
I was born in Paris myself, though my family emigrated to the U.S. when I was only five years old. I have been back many times & have explored the city quite a bit. Maybe this is a well known door that someone can identify or maybe it's just one of the thousands of nameless historical & artistic artifacts that can be found all over Paris.
wonderful colors, texture and depth
Saint Pierre de Monmatre. I love your photo.
Andrea, thanks - you're absolutely right - this door is from Saint-Pierre de Montmartre. And as it turns out, I was absolutely wrong in assuming this was an ancient door that had seen a lot of history. Though Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, the church itself, is supposed to be the oldest church in Paris (consecrated in 1147), the doors (this is one of a set of three) were built in 1980 by an Italian sculptor. Maybe they will see centuries of future history (if the human race doesn't wipe itself out)...
This is a magnificent doorway! The carving is so richly detailed and crafted. What a great find, the post work lifts its atmos even more!
and here I was about to comment about the number of hands that pushed or pulled this door though the ages It is still quite marvelous
Someone did some fantastic carving on that door; no matter the age, it fits well in the spot and its surroundings, and it's proof that the workmanship is so good people can't tell the difference without being told. Your lighting and postwork really enhance the beauty!
Superb lighting !!!
It would cost a mint for a door like that today. Great shot.
Very fine capture...interesting reading the info comments. I'm sure the panels will tell a story, but I can't read it
It's beautiful, and I love the lighting. I suppose if this is the golden door, there's someone nearby lifting a lamp?
A beautiful capture and the only door that could challenge this one was the doors on Grace Cathedral in San Francisco but most likely not as old as this one!
