Description
This image is fascinating in that those rods are formed: common extrusive igneous (volcanic) rock formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava exposed at or very near the surface of a planet or moon.
In this shot you can easily see the trails and rails
don't have vertigo when you climb this one!

Utterly amazing image!!!!!
Wow, the trail railings really put the size in perspective here. Fascinating shot!
Fantastic capture
Fantastic Mountain View!
That distant railing really gives a great feel of the massive scale of this formation. A super shot, Mike!
Mike, those really are some amazing formations. Thank you so much for giving us the background information on them.
just viewin' i have vertigo, Mike. cool area and shot.
Great zoom!
Interesting image. Looks great in zoom. The basalt I saw in Iceland is much more sharply defined and an orangey color. This formation is probably much older that the formations in Iceland.
A splendid textural capture! Fascinating image and fine photo, Mike! Well done!
A very good close up of this fantastic relic of long past history.

An excellent explanation of Beacon Rock's creation and I could see the railings in original post! Very cool place! Sort of like Moro Rock's granite dome formation in Sequoia National Park, California. A sweet shot Mike!!
This looks like some of the views in the White Mountains of NH.
