Description

The second battle of El Alamein was the end of Gen. Rommel's Afrika Korps and Germany's North African campaign. Though he was a brilliant strategist, Rommel's Afrika Korps were diminished in size considerably by the 2nd battle of El Alamein, and he finally met his match against the massive force assembled by Montgomery and the allies. Having laid some 450k landmines to funnel the allied tank force into kill zone corridors, Rommel's extremely effective Flak 88 batteries waited to do their worse on the advancing allied force. Tilting the battle in the allies favor was the introduction of the brand new US Sherman M4A1 tank. 252 of the new tanks were directly delivered to the British 8th Army. They proved to be very effective against the highly successful panzer Mk IV's. The unfortunate tendency of the new tank to catch fire very easily earned it the nicknames "Ronson" (after the popular cigarette lighter of "lights the first time" fame), and gruesomely, "Tommycooker". The second battle of El Alamein was a two week long battle that resulted in the breaking of Rommel's forces and the first major land victory for Great Britain since the war began. I've tried to depict a Flak 88 battery and the crews waiting to engage the new tanks that helped flesh out the Allied advance. Panzer tank: Ranman38 SD Kfz 9 Famo "Bull" halftrack: Touchwood at Ontarget3d Flak88: Also by Touchwood available free at Ontarget also. Shell casings and ammo wicker boxes: Ontarget3d free by Ranman38 German army Tents: Graciously shared by Tryphon Crew: Daz's M3 with uniforms put together and modified and re-textured from items available from Poser World and adh3d field cap from his site adh3d.com (Most of Touchwood's and Ranman88's items might be available on Rendo as well.) Storch: I got this on the internet a long time ago and its provenance escapes me, but it is heavily rebuilt and re-textured by myself out in the old workshop. I hope that's most everything...oh yeah, I built the artillery rangefinder as well...whew. C4d6CE+XL, Poser7, UVMapperPro, Vue6Infinite,PS Cs3 .

Fantastic set up, great use of the hardware and the letterbox format makes this work for me....this must have been the worst time, watching and waiting..... 10/10 ( The tracks on that 'Panzer' look rather wide, more like a Panther (and they never went to Africa)....but keep it under you're hat, nobody will notice :-)

One of your best Bill...I'm only seeing this on an IPad but what I see is a very realistic setup. I'll comment more when I see this on a bigger screen.

Thanks for telling it as it was, not flag waving for the sake of... Shermans did blow at the first hit, both U.S. and British crews hated them for that.. (Later versions were better and upgunned). Often (very), the only time you knew an 88 was there was when a tank blew as a gun fired from out of sight.. BRILLIANT Render, as Neil says one of your best, GREAT job.. Rob

Really nice job on the natural poses - though 3 on the right are a bit stiff. Great job in putting us there, love the Storch.
