Description
At the gallery,we are having a show with a music theme,so I put together another musical instrument which I made from a computer heat sink. The fins produce a nice, mellow ringing sound when played. The show is in coordination with a free jazz festival that is going on in the neighborhood on Saturday.Thank you for taking a look and for any comments.

Cool looking assemblage artwork.
I love art you can interact with!
Art from old electronics - I love it!
Jim, this was a very clever idea if you had. I wish I could attend the gallery showing.
COOL piece of art, is it analog? remeniscing the first Moogs ? LOL
It's very cool !!!
Cool design and idea Excellent work
Sorry, but I can't see any musical connection. It's just a heatsink stuck on to what looks like the logic board of a hard drive and an old keypad board. How is it a harp? Looks more like a nuclear power plant than a harp, and what are the other 3 pieces supposed to be?. Please explain.
It is a type of a percussion instrument. The fins of the heat sink are played by either striking or strumming the 3 smaller pieces to produce a variety of pleasing sounds.
Thanks Jay-el-Jay, but as the fins are all the same size then they would all play the same note. If they ranged from tall to short or short to tall they would have different notes.
Different sounds are produced by striking different areas of the fins and by using the various strikers much like various sounds are achieved by the same drumskin depending on which part of the drumskin is stuck and by using various sticks, mallets, brushes or by hand.
I tossed a circuit board for a smoke detector yesterday. I was thinking about your art. outstanding and original idea
thats very interesting! an unknown instrument made of pc pieces! cool and impressive! ;o)
I think the title would be a good name for an album...
cool
you're always so creative
wow this is cool
I am repeatedly amazed at the variety of sound body... much more... what the people try out...the world is full of music!
Really interesting what you still can do with old parts. I can imagine about how it sounds. Great shot.
Fabulous capture and idea, Jim. Very creative instrument for sure. I wonder if it plays the same notes, no matter which rib you strike. Or if it is meant to strike all ribs at once.
See the follow up comment above to learn about how different sounds can be made. Thanks for the comment.
I can understand how this works Jim - a sweet idea. I can't imagine how many thousands of computer parts that I threw away after a 32 year PC repair career. To think that I started out converting tubes into transistors!
I find it amazing to think of the advances that have been made in recent decades. From tubes to transistors and now to printed circuits. What's next?
