Description
Just back from a few days in Portland to visit my son & his family. They live two blocks from the Mt. Tabor Reservoir, which is the subject of this photo. We always take walks by the reservoir & the park that it borders when we visit.
This reservoir has been in the news lately. A teenager was caught urinating in this reservoir & as a result, the Portland Water Bureau decided to drain 38 million gallons of water. Considering that this is an open air reservoir with birds doing what comes naturally all the time, this seems like an absurd & wasteful decision & it has been widely criticized & ridiculed.
Probably not the most appealing story to accompany this photo, but that's what happened...

!!! That's absolutely absurd. I assume this water gets filtered more than once, then treated with the various things the water boards of the world deem necessary to provide safe drinking water. Chlorine is pretty standard, and half a cup of pee in 38 million gallons ought to be cleared right out by the amount of chlorine they use before it gets to your kitchen faucet! I'm sure there are plenty of drought-plagued places they could ship that water. What ARE they thinking??? Aside from that ... this is an outstanding picture! :)

What a beautiful capture of this reservoir reflecting that dramatic sky; I agree, it was a really stupid act to drain and discard all that water. Urine is sterile anyway, unless a person is ill. And you can't tell me that water sitting out in the open is better and safer. A little treatment would have rendered it as good as before. A few ounces of human urine in 38 million gallons would be so diluted...DOH! Idiots.
Fantastic reflections. Interesting story. Apparently the water has already been treated and goes directly into the system. These are just holding tanks. They routinely drain and clean them every spring and fall anyway. Too bad they had already done the spring cleaning when the incident occurred.
