Description
Two of many oil rigs offshore along the Alabama coast near Mobile.
Taken early this morning during a walk through the Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary.
This is not the type of marine scenery I usually photograph but the rigs make for an interesting sight. The money is very good for those who work offshore but this is no place to be during a hurricane!

They are very interesting architecturaly and photo-wise. With a little imagination one can see a cathedral with 2 towers and a spire. The sun gives this rig a beautiful appearance on the sunny side. But, as you say, no place to be in a hurricane (and, my, are there lots of them in the area). The designers must take that into account. Also a very tough place to work even without hurricanes. Keep up the good work! :-)

Man, those things are BIG---there are some off the coast of southern California, but I don't think they're this big. Great shot of these giants!!

A friend of mine's hubby works the rigs over here. Great money but hard, dangerous work. He gets flown out there, and regularly has to train for emergency landings. They have a mock-up helicopter that gets dumped in a deep pool and all the passengers have to get free! Great shot BTW. I remember seeing them off the Californian coast. Over here, they tend to be 100's of miles out to sea.....so we don't get to see the rigs from land.

That's a great shot! I couldn't figure out how you got such a close view, but your EXIF data reminded me you took my camera and your long lens. Outstanding results! This is a much better view than I've seen yet. Nicely done!

Btw, I didn't get an ebot for this, Bill: Maybe why you have much fewer comments for it than for your other uploads (Ie, maybe the bots didn't work at some point, yesterday). I hope more people see it, it's worth it. To the pic: Your low pov---with just a ribbon of water below---hands this whole shot over to the sky and those metal gods. They're almost ghostly, standing there with that light pouring in from the side (dawn light). And the rig in the back makes one think these go on for a lonnnnnng time, even if they don't. It's a strangely solitary shot, almost melancholy in the way they just sit there all alone. Your capture makes them feel like big strange creatures out there. Alone and huge. If you'd included more water, it'd be a different picture. This one's about solitude and hugeness, just sitting there in the great expanse. Very expressive shot, Bill. I hope more people see it.

Great capture Bill during this time of day. You can see these things off the coast of Southern California and I also saw them from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. I can't help but think, what if?. What if there is an explosion or a spill? Similar to the BP one in the Gulf? It ruins the coastline,the beaches and the wildlife and cost millions to clean up. In Rio I thought about the beautiful, world famous beaches that would be ruined. Same in Southern California. They also have thee rigs in the North Sea off northern England and Scotland. Saw some Norwegian oil workers came on shore for leave and they were sucking up beer big time. These jobs pay very well, but they are also very dangerous. Anyway, this is nicely captured with the low sunlight Bill.
