Description
After some closeups of madrone textures, I thought I'd zoom out & shoot this panorama of a group of madrone trees on the trail. I used my camera's built-in panorama shot mode, which allows me to just pan continuously & then stitches it together instantly in camera. This shot probably totaled a little less than a 180 degree pan. I used Perfect Effects 8 for postwork...
Zoom is much, much better.

zoom is essential: it's the language of tree bottoms, in their musical rhythms, their salsa beats and chaotic accents, the staccato-beats of trunks crammed together, etc. Musical terminology comes to mind (I was a musician, it's hard for me to resist). The predominant reds are broken by white accents and shadows; and of course by the sky (which dissolves the leaves in your shot). It's a sweeping view, even though it's 'just tree bottoms', with the feeling of a big under-belly with all the chaos that connotes---but it's very musical all the same. Most photographers would go for tree middles or tops; but you did a panorama of bottoms, and your made a forest-floor salsa band. (If you're like classical, it feels like Stravinsky.) Terrific, Claude. Man what an intense vision you have.
