Description
These two brass plates were set in the sidewalk in front of a home in the Kirchstrasse, Alt- Moabit. I would have never noticed them, but my brother Wolfgang (billcody) pointed them out to me.
I went back the next day to take some pictures. While photographing them a couple of bearded, dark-haired guys came up to me and asked me a few questions about these plates. It turned out these two were Russian Jews.
The inscription on the left plate reads:
Here lived
Betty Brasch
nee Berg
born 1868
deported 14.9.1942
dead 19.4. 1943
The inscription on the right plate reads:
Here lived
Frieda Brasch
born 1890
deported 1.3.1943
murdered in
Auschwitz
These are sad reminders of Germany's past.
This picture was taken on 31. December 2013,

I never realised billcody was your brother!!!!!!!!!! And the more frighting thing is, it still goes on in many parts of the world to this day in various forms. We as humans rarely learn our lessons.............we are collectively quite stupid in this regard and often no damn good!
Very sad indictment on the state of mankind's nature.. :-(
I have never seen anything quite like this, and it does provoke much emotion. Also there is 22 years difference in the two birthdates, so Frieda may have been a daughter or a late-arriving sister to Betty. You made a slight typo in the last name of Frieda. So much mystery still remains, not to mention their entire life story. Oh, I see now, Frieda had to be a daughter. Betty had a much longer life, but what was her life like? Always questions remain when mankind goes mad in war times. Thanks for posting this!
impressive !
A grim reminder indeed.
@whaleman! Thanks!
A reminder of a horrible past
A frightful reminder.
That's really sad. At least they are remembered.
A reminder of one of the cruelest times in our planets history, but not the only terrible time. We are a destructive, greedy race and one day the tables will turn against us. Excellent reminder, thanks for sharing this.
a Lasting Memorial.
A sad but fantastic find!
Mother nature will one day decide that we are not worthy of being on this planet due to things like this; Very grim and sad reminder of the collective stupidity of man towards himself
touching memento and great tribute. Thanks for sharing!
GREAT TRIBUTE
yes it is sad. happy you went back to take photos as these may be dig out one day just to erase the history the holocaust never happen. There is a movement about that going on now. I google betty and she did came up . the dated is the same. the same with Frieda also.
A very sobering picture, but an important reminder also.
... awful! (you knew we still remember 'our' war victims every year on may 4th? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_of_the_Dead http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationale_Dodenherdenking with 2 minutes of silence at least. prior to may 5th, the day Holland was liberated, which is a national celebration day with lots of activities http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_Day_(Netherlands) apart from that and apart from liberators/veterans coming over at other occassions, we have zillions of plates, statue's and other reminders. but these are the most harsh I've ever seen, just as it was?!! :'-( )
As I recall, Theresienstadt was a camp in Czechoslovakia. The dates are so interesting. Two lives cut short, and with only these small clues.
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
A sad remind of a tragic and terrible time.. Its surprising what happened all over the world during war, caused by ALL side! Good post Rob
I like what Andrew wrote. I saw a photo similar to this a few years ago, maybe right here at RR and maybe even the same brass markers. A fine photo my friend!
Sometimes we do need to be reminded of certain things. It's one of the sad facts of life...
