Description
Whereas Mykonos is known for tourism, resorts, beaches, nightlife and a hub for gay activity, Patmos is known as 'The Jerusalem of the Aegean'. It is known worldwide as a sacred island for it is the place where Saint John, banned from Ephesus to this island by the pagan Roman emperor Dominian, wrote the Book of Revelations in 95 AD, in the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse, where he heard the voice of God talking to him.
Designated as 'Holy Island' by the Greek Parliament in 1981, as well as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, Patmos had been used as a place of exile by the Romans on account of its steep morphology.
In 1088 the monk Christodoulos Latrinos obtained permission from the Byzantine emperor Alexis I Comnenus to build a monastery to commemorate St. John. Pirate raids necessitated sturdy fortifications, and so the monastery looks like a mighty castle.
The monastery consists of buildings from different ages, compromising 10 chapels, 99 cells, as well as a Library of 890 handwritten codes and 13,000 documents about the history of the site (Sources: Lonely Planet, Greece, 1996; Wikipedia; and other sources).
