Description
The thirteenth image from 'The Living Rainforest'. You can visit their website here:
The Living Rainforest Link.
This delightful pair of birds are Java Sparrows (also variously known as Java Finch, Java Rice Sparrow or Java Rice Bird) and are native to Java, Bali and Bawean in Indonesia.
They feed mainly on grain and other seeds and generally frequent open grassland and cultivation.
The Java sparrow is considered to be a serious agricultural pest of rice and, due to ongoing habitat loss and hunting in some areas, is now uncommon in its native area.
They are popular cage birds, mostly in Asia, but are listed as Vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species in the wild.
I'm afraid the lighting wasn't at it's best for this picture but, all things considered, it didn't come out too badly for such small creatures at the distance they kept from me. :-)
