Description

Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants native to South Africa. It belongs to the plant family Strelitziaceae. The genus is named after the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. A common name of the genus is Bird of Paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower and is featured on the reverse of the 50 cent coin. The species typically reach 4 to 6 feet high in local gardens. This photo was taken in St. Augustine, FL at the gardens of the Lightner Museum. Some info from Wikipedia. It will zoom! Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Very common in my area – I’ve seen a few very large plants but most look identical to you capture. But I was not aware of the history – very nice information Dana!!!

What a great shot! I LOVE these flowers. I remember when Mike and I went on our honeymoon to Hawaii, people planted 'hedges' of these around their property. It was beautiful!

I have a clump of these that I have been waiting over 20 years to bloom. I think I'm doing something wrong. Really tho, I think it is too cold up here. Nice picture Dana.
