Description
at dedicated, no nonsense, preparade practice.
Captured 5/29/10, at the beautiful Orange County Fair & Event Center in beautiful Costa Mesa, California.
To be more precise, it was the United Scottish Society's Highland Games & Gathering's Scottish Festival of Celtic Entertainment & Food.
Much better viewed full size.
I walked freely among these groups, unchallenged in performing my photographic tasks.
Unrelenting bagpipe, drum and flute music throughout the day. I could hear it in my sleep later that night.
Au revoir, and have a simpatico day.

Looks like a very musical day out.
Beautiful details Great collage
Great work on this very cool collage, Harry.
A lot more lady pipers than I would have expected, that's kind of cool. And I love the hair on that guy in the bottom shot. A lot of different tartans, and it looks like the sun was warm that day; hard work blowing into a bag and pushing the wind out through the pipes! But I wouldn't mind hearing the pipes in my sleep, I love them. It's nice they let you wander freely, you got some great shots of these pipers!
full size, the clarity of your hues and of the details really stand out. With multiple-pic montages, I never expect great clarity: But these two bagpipe collections have real clarity, strong and vivid. I like the interplay of the pipes in the air, and the cords around them (there's a technical term for those, but I don't know it) which you caught in each shot. And you go from single to group, single to group, and then a back shot at the end---good sequence---with that great 'flying hairdo' that denise liked as well. Also, nice tones on the wall-slots in the background (in the shots where they're not 'bokeh'd' out, of course). Really these are very musical shots, with very clear detail on the pipes, the skirts, and the fur of the bags. A fine series; and as a musician, a treat for me. (A little musical note: You said you could hear these in your sleep that night. Harry? If you only heard it "that night," you have very resilient ears!!! I stood in front of a big Scottish bagpipe ensemble---like, 200 bagpipes---and I could hear it through the next decade. In case you don't know it, the Scottish is probably the most strident, loud, piercing bagpipe on earth---personally, it may be the most strident sound in this quadrant of the galaxy. Most bagpipes in the world are delicate and lyrical. But the Scottish? Ahhhhhh noooooo: They gotta have a sound that breaks windows in Detroit. And in Scotland, they're not satisfied to play them in 7's or 8''s, like they do here: Noooooo: They put them in groups of HUNDREDS, and they play 'against' each other, across a town. Now THERE'S a subtle sound! I once asked a musician to play a Scottish bagpipe in a small practice room, in the music school of Indiana University, and she picked up the pipes, said "you asked for it" and I nearly went through the freakin' roof. Those are mighty pipes. So if you were that close to these people, you deserve an award for still being able to hear anything. Just a little aside from a musician...)
I like this stuff. my family history is Scott
