Description

Zam’s Prehistoric World Notes: STOP, DO NOT READ this episode if you are easily upset. The upcoming Zam segments can possibly be disturbing. I will not hold back and write fuzzy bunny worthless chapters. As a boy I read “Johnny got his gun.” It was a dramatic read. I guess I feel like writing my own snippet version of that superb classic. I’ve also had Zam and Zan compared to Tom and Huck. Bare in mind that Huck was shot and lay near death himself and if not for the sacrifice of Jim, would have died. Narrative: Zam opened his eyes. He was sitting on a rock looking out across a grassy plain. ‘Where am I?’ The last thing he could remember was being on a forest world with his brother Zan. He had been teasing Zan about something. ‘Odd, I can’t remember what I was teasing him about.” Zam looked up at the sky. It was a strange color. The clouds hung in the sky as if they would never move again. ‘Where is my brother?’ Zam suddenly realized that Zan was not here. He looked around. ‘Oh, there you are.’ Zam saw a figure walking away in the distance. ‘Hey, horn head, come back!’ Zam shouted and tried to wave. His arms didn’t seem to want to work. He looked at his arms. They were missing. That was disturbing. Zam looked around for a moment, attempting to locate his arms. The figure was further away now. ‘Wait,’ Zam shouted at the figure. He tried to stand and fell from the rock into the tall grass. He looked down at his legs. They were gone. ‘What was happening?’ Zam was frantic and fear crawled into his veins. He tried to see where the figure was but the grass was too tall and he could not see. ‘Come back! Come back! Don’t leave me here.’ Zam tried to get up. He tried to get up. He tried to get up. The world faded away and he slept. *Beep* *Beep* *Beep* The nurse looked down at the boy. His face was calm now. The sedative would let him sleep. She stroked the boy’s forehead and pushed his tangle of wild black hair back from his brow. “You are going to be okay,” the nurse said softly. “The genetic surgeons are going to put you back together. You just have to hold on, don’t give up.” The nurse turned to the doctor that was reading the boy’s vitals. “He will be okay,” the nurse whispered, “Won’t he?” The doctor flipped the vid screen off and looked at the nurse. He had never seen her on the floor before; she must be new to the trauma center. “We don’t see injuries this severe often, but when we do, well, there is just no way to tell. He is trapped alone inside his head and will be for several months. If he gives up, there is no medicine that will save him.” The doctor took his turn laying a hand on the boy’s head. “Don’t give up, keep fighting,” the doctor told the sleeping boy.

A nightmare of the worst kind, being locked inside your own mind and no way to climb out or know if there is anyone out there to hear your silent screams. Hard stuff but wonderfully written.

Absolutely correct in your path, and warning to sensitive souls, not all is pretty and pink, however! Keep going, please! Another excellent illustration.

It's fiction, so have at it! Fluffy bunnies don't get my attention, but neither does gratuitous gunfire and macho b/s. So far you're doing fine! :)

I agree with GrandmaT - my worst fear is that when the end comes my mind will be adrift in a sea of darkness.

A very well told and strong story, if indeed unsettling... and as usual, the picture truly reflects the story's atmosphere.
