This is a male Dragonhunter Dragonfly ( Hagenius brevistylus). It is the largest Dragonfly species I have photographed ( a little more than 3" long) and the largest found in my area. It gets it's name from the fact that it often preys on smaller Dragonflies as do a few other species. I have some images of a female Eastern Pondhawk eating an Eastern Amberwing dragonfly. It is a new species for me to see or photograph and after 8 years of photographing dragonflies, brings my photo capture record to 28 of the approximately 65 species found in my area. I was delighted to have had the opportunity to photograph it. Regarding my interest in one of the new 'super-zoom' cameras, I am looking for something that will let me get the quality and minimal focal distance as my little Nikon Coolpix 7900 P&S would do and reach much further than my 55-200mm Nikon DSLR lens will. I want to fill the frame with a mosquito from 5 inches away, a dragonfly from 15 foot away, a robin from 50 foot away, a raccoon from 100 foot away or a deer from 100 yards away and still get fine details. I cannot afford all the DSLR lenses I would need to do this but with super-zooms offering up to 50x optical magnification and effective long ranges of 800 -1200mm , it seems reasonable to assume they should be able to handle all this. I have narrowed my search down to three cameras that are barely in my price range --- - a Nikon Coolpix P510 - a Canon Power Shot SX50 - a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200. I would really appreciate any first hand experience or info regarding my assumption or any of these cameras. My thanks to those who have taken the time to comment on earlier postings.
