Description
Devils Postpile National Monument contains one of the worlds finest examples of visible basaltic columns.
Nearly 100,000 years ago a Basaltic lava lake some 400 feet(122 meters) in depth filled this valley. The Lava cooled slowly and cracks formed on the surface to release tension. The slow cooling allowed for the cracks to form into hexagons, one of natures most efficient and stable shapes. As the interior cooled the cracks deepened to form the columns.
During the last ice age some 20,000 years ago, a glacier exposed this cliff and polished the top of the Basaltic columns smooth. Today the face of this cliff is still ever changing by the forces of weathering and earthquakes

It is a three image stitch. Details of the columns and lichen are best seen in zooooooooooom
Beautiful place! PoV gives a strange feeling, as if everything was going to switch to the time of the photo.
Interesting angle! Thanks for the info as well.
Nature is amazing & your work on this image is flawless!

I could have done with your photos 50 years ago when I did A level geography!
Great shot. I've never seen it from this angle.
Similar in a way to Devils Tower. Nice shot Dana.
Cool image and great info, Dana!
wow wish I can see this. maybe one day
EXCELLENT IMAGE
What a fascinating post. The last ice age the world has seen was 'The Great Ice Age' which was only 11,000 years ago. I wonder how these forms were effected by that one. 5/5
Cool image and great POV - thanks for posting the information!

Wow! Excellent work on this; what a fascinating landscape! I would love to see this in person.
ah - had to look this up, as I live in NM [New Mexico] I couldn't figure out where this is - calif! Anyways very cool pano; well done.
Yes, I like that. A great geological shot. The columns play wonderfully into the perspective and take you to the eternity of the heavens. There is great depth with the distinct layers of rubble, columns, trees and finally sky.
