Designed as a long-range bomber for the IJN in the 1930's, the Mitsubishi G3M saw extensive service during offensive operations in China and South East Asia- including the destruction of Force Z ( HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse) during the invasion of Malaya. It acquired the Allied reporting name of "Nell." True to the philosophy operating at the time, the type achieved its extraordinary ocean-hopping maximum range by dispensing with all those "luxuries" like protection for the crew, massed defensive armament or self-sealing fuel tanks. Having the payload carried externally was unusual for a dedicated level-bomber of the day however the alignment of the engines is probably the types most unusual feature - they angle slightly away from the fuselage centreline. The G3M was already something an anachronism as the Pacific Theatre hotted up, and its role was increasingly taken up by the newer Mitsubishi G4M ("Betty"_ bomber.
