Rain
Evergreen trees
Incredibly tall
Impossibly old
One hundred forty-five inches a year
Keeps them covered in moss
Lush and beautiful
Prevailing winds
Drop it all
On western slopes
East of the peaks
It's a different world
Dry
Brown
Dusty
Irrigated fields produce
Yakima apples
Palouse wheat
Between rain forest
And irrigation
Lie perpetually damp
Drizzle-dripping
Misty-cold cities
Slowly rusting
Growing mold
Windshield wipers swish away
Muddy water thrown up
From puddled streets
While going home to
Wet dogs and
Damp socks
Sun breaks
Are a welcome
Weather report
In winter
Nobody appreciates
A day without rain
Like someone from
Seattle

Wonderful verse and a great picture,but its not just Seattle that gets the rain I seem to have done a whole flower show season here in the UK getting wet standing in mud or soggy grass still that's better than burnt brown grass and trees.
What a wonder of a poem! I'm from one of those flat places that doesn't actually get "mountain weather" and so I can't imagine what it's like to live in such a damp environment, though it holds some appeal! This is a marvel of a poem, and I'm glad I read it while taking a break from doing whatever it is that I'm doing. Such insights too...I can't say that I take sunny days for granted, but I do wonder at times, what nar-constant rain does for local perceptions of what weather is.

Amazing work Tara. It is starting to heat up here in Pretoria. yesterday it was a hot 29 Degrees Celcius and today they predict 32. So we will see what the rain will hold in for this summer. God Bless.
