Description
Walking through a nearby cemetery, we came upon a special section set aside for American Civil War veterans...notice the "GAR" on the obelisk in the picture above.
[The US Civil War was fought between 25 states of the north (known as The Union) and 11 states in the south (The Confederacy) between April 12, 1861 - May 9, 1865. The Grand Army of The Republic (GAR) was formed as the Union veterans organization in 1866 and dissolved when its last member died in 1956. Virtually, every town in the north had a chapter of the GAR.]
Of course, I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I added a ghostly layer of four old Union veterans to give this photo a little something extra :)
Bill
P.S. For any of you with heritage from the old south, I promise I'll keep my eyes open for United Confederate Veterans (UCV) cemeteries on future trips to the south...

Great image!!
Great stuff Bill. I can smell the ectoplasm from here!
Superb work here Bill and B&W is the only medium to suit the image. Perfect.
That is an excellent ghostly addition Bill!
Very well done Bill! I really like the result.
Clever stuff, Bill!!
Personally, I prefer the enhanced version. Nice image.
a superb image, (images)capturing the essence of the times beautifully, would look good in sepia as well
very beautiful work and commentary
Very nice photo. The black/white effect is great - Civil War type of exposure. The low sun makes for a particularily interesting lighting (the strong illumination of the sides of the tomb stones even suggest a dramatic stage lighting). The addition of the 4 figures give different levels of interpretation - a ghost story (haunted grave yard) or, as you suggest, remembering some of the fellows whose bodies are buried here. By the way, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, in her autobiography "The Wheel of Life", tells of photographing two friends in a park which lay near an old Indian grave yard. When the film was developed, a BIG semi-transparent Indian with crossed arms was visible in the photo. Your photo reminds me of her experience. It makes one wonder how much those who have passed into the spirit plane (6th dimension) are aware of us and our doings. Keep up the good work! This is really a dramatic image. The lighting here does a lot. :-)
Nice story and photo Bill.
Amazing capture and post work Bill. The ghostly figures that you have added makes this capture extra special. Outstanding work. God Bless.
Very well done, Bill; a nostalgic flavour!
Like what you have done Bill!
An eerie and wonderful image, Bill! This is so perfect - the ghostly figures absolutely make this exceptional! Brilliant work, Bill! I'll have to admit when I saw the title, I thought "Woah - Bill's into Star Wars, now?" LOL!
wonderful picture
marvelous work
An extra something is always nice, especially when it enhances a mood and makes a reference to history! I'm not one to believe in ghosts, but like you, I'll put one (or four) in a photo! This is really superbly done...wonderfully seamless and I like the fact that it's in black and white! That ups the mood for me.
lol took photos of ghosts. hahhaha i know you did that. as you say you did but you did wonderful work
Nicely done Hugs Susan~
Nice little twist with the spectres Bill :)
I really like it. Now it needs a companion: the same shot with troops in uniform. (Same basic shot; ghosts in uniform, and swap back and forth between the two enhancements... Hmmm... start with just the graves and then bring the troops / veterans in.) Go for it. I recall some of the older graves in local cemetaries had GAR flag holders on them. Took some time before I knew the significance of them.
I love how you have done this, talk about seeing ghosts from the past. Excellent work and a great idea.
Wonderful ghostly Image and great info Bill!!
I never knew that's what it meant so you've educated me there Bill.. Nice work on this, VERY effective indeed! Well done.. Rob
