Description
This picture was taken from US Route 191 about 10 miles south from the rodeo grounds in the community of Round Rock. In this picture the rock formation known as Round Rock is partially visible in the distance.
The elevation of the Navajo Reservation is between 5,000 to 7,000-ft with higher mountains and peaks. The climate is harsh; dry summers, wind, and often brutal winters, and soil conditions are generally poor with little water available.
The Navajo and Apache are relatively new to the American Southwest. Historical records indicate that they arrived around 1,400 CE (Common Era, Current Era, or Christian Era) from Northwestern Canada and Southeastern Alaska.
Traditionally, the Navajo were semi-nomadic until the 20th century. Until they came into contact with the Spanish and Pueblos (Indians) the Navajo were hunters and gatherers. They adopted farming techniques and crops from the Pueblo people, growing mainly corn, beans, and squash.
As a result of Spanish influence they began herding sheep and goats, depending on them for food and trade. They spun and wove sheered wool into blankets and clothing which could be used for personal use or for trading. They also depended on their flocks of sheep for meat.
This way of life pretty much continues to this day. Weaving, usually done by women, and silversmithing is used to supplement their income.

SUPERB SCENE WONDERFUL CAPTURE
Impressive landscape, almost without vegetation ! Splendid capture !
Another great shot Sig. I did get to see a lot of erosion, hiking in the Painted Desert, Canyondlands and Capital Reef!
a harsh naked land with all the wrinkles in view. Someday I wish to see these deserts and spaces where it is hot at day and cold at night.
Raw nature has its beauty, and capturing it another art. You are gifted!
