Description
Space, for me - from south rim of Grande Canyon, a storm blowing in from the north had just touched the far rim. You can see it dipping into the hanging valley to the right. The desert was about to be hit by rain.
Do these places in part touch us because they contain hidden metaphors? The oldest deposits are at the bottom, the youngest at the top. Yet the river that cuts through them works her way from top to bottom - so the oldest "exposure" is actually at the top and the youngest at the bottom. It is completely natural, in total harmony, and yet what we see is the result of the earth's processes working in perfectly opposite directions.
Does not such splendor say something about light needing dark to be seen? Or that shadows are not shadows without light to define them? Look at the light and dark on this landscape and think... would it be half as interesting totally lit or totally dark?
What does that say about our love of tribalism? The demand for conformity. It is so comforting to go with us vs them; and the less of them the better for us! But would we be us without them?
Space - for me - indeed.

Deep thoughts, Roxy. Great food for thought as well, especially with the perfect image to embody them. Clive
great view, excellent
Wonderful shot Roxy and putting me in mind of when I stood there all those years ago when visiting the USA. You have to be there to appreciate this magnificent and natural structure it is truly breathtaking, love this and thanks, hugs Jane xx
Fabulous landscape view and capture Roxy, love it.
Fantastic shot. I've never seen the Grand Canyon.. it's on my list of stuff to do someday. You really captured a good sense of scale from this vantage.
out-stan-ding shot!!!
It's amazing that here in your photo, everything is so neatly layered, like the layers of a cake. Around our part of the country, the layers are all over the place. We've a small creek running through our property, and it's cut a nice little valley. One side is pretty steep, and you can see the layers of the rock in places, not at all nicely even like in the Grand Canyon. As for the light/dark aspect, I don't think either would be appreciated without the other. It's the shadows that accentuate teh light, or is it the light that accentuates the shadows? grins. A magnificent and awesome view, regardless of what lessons one takes away.
Wonderful scene, great work.
great and impressiv capture of the famous place. Nice thoughts too !
A scenery like this with a view over a landscape showing both present and past, makes one to feel humble of this grandios place called Earth...We should take much better care of it - before it get rid of us?...
What a breathtaking scene! Great job, Roxy!
Fabulous place. Would I be nitpicking if I said the horizon doesn't look straight? Looks fantastic zoomed nonetheless and the layers of shadows cast by each canyon edge are awesome!
The man's figure takes a fine image and doubles it in interest. Your words are good for ruminating. We all love to feel great/on-top-of-the-world but how would we know we are there if there were no valleys? I agree with you, life needs contrasts:)
A grand vision!
Great capture at the right time of day with the sun low in the western sky.
