Description
...much to our surprise, this fine Pileated Woodpecker landed on a big old dead tree in the woods next to our front door and started up quite a racket.
...a quick grab of my tripod, camera and 200mm zoom lens caught him at work.
...he didn't seem frightened of me and worked until he was good and ready to leave.

Super shot Bill and nice textures in the wood.
pass him the head ache tablets
I'm so jealous! I've been trying for years to get near one of these. They are here but in small numbers. I've heard them often, seen them a few times, and never got even one shot! Very nice photo!
Stunning capture Bill. God Bless.
Great stuff. I suggest he comes back tomorrow night and tries it again..........
What a super shot, I love that intense concentration in his face!
He looks quite prehistoric, fabulous capture. The girls pricked their ears up when I told them you live near a wood :o)
Congratulations. I have a couple shots of these, but they are hard to get. Sure are an impressive bird to see.
Excellent shot.
They are so funny love the capture of this guy.
....But You Can't Come In!' LOL Great and very lucky shot Bill.. Wow! What a fine looking bird.. There are meant to be several around the area where Rosy lives but so far I've seen and caught the one on camera.. Very close mind you.. lol This is a great shot, well done! Rob
Very cool capture
fantastic capture
Excellence Bill. well done for your quick thinking :}
Great shot, this guy looks he might have been the model for the cartoon Woody...
Xcellent capture!
A great experience to get so close to this fantastic creature!
Wonderful capture Bill!!! Don't see many of these here in Colorado.
Oooh! Really nice shot. :)
YESSS! This is a great shot of this little beauty. I see why he worked there. Alot of worms making holes there :-)
LUNCHTIME! And flew away when there were no insects left. They do keep trees free of boring insects. Nice, and very lucky, photo. Thanks for comments. Glad you looked up the Mellon - it's near where you live (I think), so you may be able to visit it (and get more photos than I did!). Keep up the good work! :-)
A busy little fellow. Great capture.
This guy was sure accommodating! I hope we'll see more of him during the spring and summer months. There are usually a few of them around the area. Sometimes they get up on OJ's roof and bang on the gutters. It's quite loud! LOL!
superb, i love the headgear
yes you got him! superb pic and beautiful lovely woodpecker!
A constant rat-a-tat indicates sheer determination, as captured in this cool pic of Woody Woodpecker at work, Bill. Actually, this guy is most handsome as woodpeckers go. And, please check out my 1950 Ford Business Coupe foto, recently posted.
Great pic of Woody Hugs Susan~
They can be quite noisy; I just can't imagine how their brains survive all that hammering. Unless that's where the term "bird-brained" comes from? Anyway, I've seen one or two in the tall trees of my back garden, and I hear them all over the neighborhood (and around work, too). They fly away too quickly for me to capture any, maybe I don't have enough insects in my trees for them to spend any time pursuing. Given the height of the trees and the proximity to the house, that's probably a good thing ;} Great work and quick thinking to get this shot, Bill!
must been looking for food to much to look at you. cool shot
like this bird, beautiful shot
