Description
Detail of the roofline at Saint Edwards in Kenmore, Washington.
Very fancy!
Two string courses, a bit of freize, gothic arches with quatrefoils (well, half quatrefoils), all resting on what I believe to be acanthus leaf corbels. (I mean ... I know they're corbels ... I'm not sure they're meant to be acanthus leaves.)
Let me know if I've messed any of that up.
This is all in aid of holding up the gutters. :)

Whatever they are, and 'corbels' are as unfamiliar to me as 'string courses' and 'quatrefoils' and likely to remain so, I have often wondered just how these decorative elements are actually attached to the building itself. I'm assuming they are cemented to protruding structural metal pieces, but I've never seen anything like this being built. And are you referring to the rounded rope-like part and the squared part as the "Two string courses?" These architectural terms are all unfamiliar to me (and yes, I never look anything up, LOL).

In my state of dyslexia, I read that as half quarterfoils and started as a mathlete to question a half quarter lol..Oh well see what you mean now after looking again, great shot of the details Tara, love the warm glowing light too.

Beautiful photo, Tara. And you're right on with the architectural description. Ah, if only architects today had that artistic capability, and builders the will and money to build like that today, instead of steel and glass boxes! How much more interesting and beautiful our environments would be! But, I think I just shot myself in the foot - without those modern buildings we wouldn't have all the interesting photos you and Bill have made of just such buildings and the reflections in them. Yet... there's a beauty in each, modern and old, but of differing types. Keep up the good work! :-)
