Description
Captured back on 7/23/06, early AM, within easy treading distance of my recalcitrant residence.
Plumeria (common name Frangipani) is a genus of flowering plants of the family that includes Dogbane: the Apocynaceae. It contains 7-8 species of mainly deciduous shrubs and small trees. They are native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America as far south as Brazil, but have been spread throughout the world's tropics.
The genus, originally spelled Plumiera, is named in honor of the seventeenth-century French botanist Charles Plumier, who traveled to the New World documenting many plant and animal species. The common name "Frangipani" comes from an Italian noble family, a sixteenth-century marquess who invented a plumeria-scented perfume. Many English speakers also simply use the generic name "plumeria". In Hawaii, the name is "melia". In Sri Lanka, it is referred to as araliya and (in English) as the Temple Tree. In Cantonese it is known as, 'gaai daan fa' or the 'egg yolk flower' tree.

Very Lovely!! Wish I could smell them. :)
Wow! Super shot of this Plumeria, Harry. We used to have lots of these around here....but we are getting way too many freezes lately, so people have given up growing them. You have to go further South to see a lot of them.
Beautiful flowers and capture! Wonderful color and light. I love the thick petals with their well defined, curved edges. I like the bud poking up between the blossoms too. Lovely work!
Such a lovely capture of these beautiful perfumed flowers. I would love to be able to grow these here but alas it is too cold. I have to wait till I visit my daughter in Australia.
