"We're going to hang out the washing on The Brisbane Line..." Fortunately Australia and, indeed, military historians everywhere were spared the Battle of Boonoo Boonoo- just north of Tenterfield in northern New South Wales, Australia. The "Brisbane Line" is generally held to be a myth. According to the political chest-thumping in the early months of war in the Pacific, that "other lot" from down south had a secret plan to withdraw everyone into the south-east corner of the nation and abandon Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia [that's right, the bits that we've since learned are full of coal, iron ore, oil and natural gas ;-)] to the resource-hungry invaders. Unlikely, but it makes for a great election speech! Yet judging by all the WW2 tank-traps and earthworks at strategic crossing points on the NSW-Queensland border, the army engineers were kept busy there doing "something." I was intrigued to read that some of these preparations even preceeded the outbreak of war. I know that Queensland/New South Wales rivalries are always simmering just under the surface, but... TANK TRAPS? :-0 Isn't that taking horticultural quarantine just a little too far??? ;-) Here, in somebody's dreams at least, is a flight of CAC Boomerangs prowling over the maze of boulders and trees around the granite massif of Bald Rock -just north of Tenterfield.
