Description
...still in the Painted Hills in Central Oregon.
...as we walked along the trail here we could see differences in weathering and mineral content of the hills, a blue lake, and the varied green plants producing a striking show of color.
...the warm red hill colors are from iron oxides, similar to those of ordinary rust. Yellows and oranges can be a blend of iron and magnesium oxides, and the lavenders from rhyolitic lava.
...this experience was just like walking on a giant painter's palette.
