Description
...visited on October 21st enroute home to Washington.
...this is but a part of the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, in semi-arid, central Oregon.
...the Painted Hills were born in a fiery cloud of ash approximately 33 million years ago and are a spectacular display of the colors of nature's palette. A series of low clay hills striped in bands of orange, red, black, green, blue, and lavender.
...a very brief geological explanation for anyone interested: Painted Hills

Fantastic capture Bill. It almost looks like a hand and/or foot with fingers/toes.
I think the painted hills are beautiful, must be amazing to see in the flesh so to speak :o) xx
Beautiful shot of them! Just went through that general area, but didn't have time to stray off I-84, so glad to see them here.
I am really enjoying this tour of your unique countryside. Unique! Clive
Wonderful Work!!!
This is a truly beautiful shot Bill, your country is so vast and full of very interesting geological features.
I immediately added this to my "Bucket List".... WOW - this is spectacular Bill - nature at its best.
Amazing - I thought it couldn't be real but it is!

Really Beautiful...my first idea was also a macro of hand and/or foot !!! :~)
Excellent clarity and color tones in this capture of what looks like the rear part of a multilegged creature from a long ago era, Bill.
Very beautiful capture Bill!!!
Very beautiful and wonderful capture
Must have took a big bucket of paint :-) Fossil Beds, so are they dinosaur prints half way up ? maybe T-Rex's ancestors... A quite remarkable sight, I'm lost for words (sensible one's at least)..any wider angles on this?
Beautiful capture! I've never seen these, thanks for the shot and information!
When I was a child and actually played with Star Wars action figures, I was always making strange new worlds for them to explore (I'd changed their names and roles in whatever dramas I was making up and so Luke Skywalker wasn't Luke Skywalker, but some other guy, etc.) Such worlds were, invariably, made out of sofa cushions, blankets, and quilts (it's amazing how a quilt or bed-spread looks so much like rugged land, and couch cushions make excellent alien temple ruins!) But anyway, I digress...but not as much as one might think. I looked at this image, full sized, and in thumbnail, and thought what a nice clumped blanket this was, and how marvelous that it wasn't a clumped floral print covering! I'm weird like that. And then I realized, that it's actually a fossilized bed covering, and that there might be a lost action figure underneath it. Okay...maybe not. At any rate, this is a brilliant and evocative photograph and I love the whole alien vibe it has. Great sense of scale and color and an unexpected, and unusual smoothness of that rock. It reminds me of flow-stone: the kind you find in deep, deep, scarcely-explored subterranean cave systems. This is excellent.
Great pic! Reminds me of the Painted Desert in AZ.
Wow, I've never seen these; can't imagine how incredible they must be, the colors are amazing!!
Oh gosh, honey. If I got anything half so good as this, I'll be thrilled! This is absolutely fabulous. It's so difficult to capture the actual colors, and you did a spectacular job of it.
Top drawer with this one Bill!
Stunning landscape!
