This is a partial view of the nave of the duomo in Pisa. The nave is 328-ft long and has 68 columns. The dom was constructed between 1064 to 1350.

I wonder about the little door waaaaaay up there, with its attendant staircases. I also wonder how they change lightbulbs in a place like that. And before lightbulbs, the candles must have been replaced even more frequently. They worked on I-5 near Olympia from the time I was a small child until just about ten years ago. Nobody thought they'd ever finish! But can you imagine something that took 300 years to put up? Not only did they work during your entire lifetime, and that of your parents and grandparents, but for 15 generations! When they put in the last bricks, they probably had a little ceremony and the guy said, my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather put in the first brick, and now I'm putting in the last one. Man. That must have been mythic!

What a place. I have been in churches like this in Germany. There is a feeling of history in these places like I've felt nowhere else. Isn't the human eye amazing? This is one of those lighting situations where you can see so much more than you can photograph. Thanks for introducing me to this place in Pisa. Maybe we'll get there one day.
This place is so overwhelming, it was impossible for me to really capture it all. Going into churches I got from my mother, she usually went inside to say a prayer, I usually go inside and take a picture.
