Description
Graduation day at the Air National Guard NCO Academy at McGhee-Tyson ANG base in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The aircraft on static display is a Republic F-105D 'Thunderchief' a Mach 2 capable aircraft.
F-105s flew the brunt of bombing missions over North Vietnam in the early days of the Vietnam War. They operated out of Korat and Takhli Royal Thai Air Force bases in Central Thailand.
They were so heavy when they took off that they began their take-off roll looking like 18-wheelers and used up every bit of runway before they lifted off.
Later two-seat versions were used as 'Wild Weasels' for use in the specialized Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD).
This picture was taken in July 1986 and later scanned,

Neat photo Sig. Always like to see pictures like this from out of the past. The F-105 Thunderchief was quite an airplane. Your photo reminds me that the "Thud" had quite a list of additional nicknames included the "Squat Bomber", "Lead Sled", and the "Hyper Hog" and/or "Ultra Hog".
