Description
This is Tony Pedregon's Funny Car. Tony is a 2-time NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion. His best time ever over a 1/4 mile (1,320-ft; 402.34m) is 4.659 seconds. His best speed over a 1/4 mile is 331.28mph (533.03km/h).
Funny Cars have similar engines and power output than Top Fuel Dragsters and they burn the same fuel; CH3NO2.
Since Scott Kalitta was killed in June 2008 in Englishtown, Top Fuel Dragsters are now mandated to have a titanium shield installed between the driver and the engine. Many Funny Cars have that shield also.
Rear tire pressure cannot be less than 7PSI, to keep the speed down and make the sport safer.
While working on the engine the shell (what gives the car its appearance of a car) is off. In this rear view two fire bottles are behind the cage (where the driver sits), and the two silver ropes are the connection to the two drag chutes (not visible in this picture), which deploy once the run is over, to help slow down the car.

How I Miss Going To The Drag Races, Thank-you For This Wonderful Image, The Speeds Have Gotten So Fast In Such A Short Period Of Time and It Was Sad About Scott Kalitta, But Everything We Do In Life Carries A Certain Amount Of Danger. ;~)
It is amazing how much goes into making these cars, and the speeds now are just over the top! Great shot!
Great capture and info Sig!!
wow pure power and adrenaline.
Nice shot but I don't think I will be buying one!!!
Stunning capture my friend. God Bless.
Wow. 331mph. Wow. That's crazy! Back in the 70s (all those years ago, when I was a girl), there was a funny car driver named Gordie Bonin. Do you remember him? His nickname was "240 Gordie," because he regularly drove the quarter mile at about that speed. That was considered to be amazing at the time, and his performance in the sport got him inducted into the hall of fame a while back. 331? Holy cow! Great shot of this machine, my friend.
This is one sport I have never been to, and always wanted to go to see! Never interested much in others, F1, Go-Carting, whatever.. Though classic Sports at Goodwood would be something to see! lol Great shot, super info Sig.. Well done.. Rob
impressive capture
Nice job! The Drags are just so much fun with the noise, smell and fast cars!
Fantastic shot.
Interesting shot and great information. Well done.
Awesome capture and very interesting narrative.
Awesome vehicle!!!!!
Interesting shot and great information !
they are not funny at all when the driver loses control and they become airborne rangers.outstanding subject
Thats what happened to Scott Kalitta in 2008!
Great shot! :)
VERY FUNNY
SUPERB shot and narrative! (Scott Kalitta died @ Englishtown, N.J. track when he couldn't get his car to stop in the shut down length afforded when he ran through the sand pits and mesh fence stops and into a concrete pole at the end of it all. Since then, all the TOP FUEL CLASSES (Rails and Funny Cars) only race to the 1,000 foot distance instead of the old 1,320 feet/quarter mile distance.
Another fantastic shot Sig and more informative narrative.
Have seen these cars on TV but never in person. This shot has added to my education:) Thanks Sig.
