Description
These dragsters compete in the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) Nationals. One of the venues is Firebird Lake, Phoenix, Arizona.
These dragsters have engines based on the Hemi with a power output estimated to be anywhere from 8,500 to 10,000 hp and torque of approximately 6,000lbf-ft.
They burn a mixture of 90% Nitromethane and 10% Methanol.
Since the death of Scott Kalitta in June 2008 (a top competitor) they more often than not only run over a 1,000-ft distance. They typically accelerate from standstill to 100 mph (160km/h) in 0.7 seconds.
The conditions in Phoenix were not ideal, the official temperatures at the airport were 99F for both Friday and Saturday (that's in the shade). The track conditions were warmer, both ambient and track surface temperature.
To give you an idea what 99F means when you watch these races for 10 hours while sitting in the sun. We each drank 9 bottles of water during that time without ever having to go to the bathroom.
Since the conditions weren't ideal the times reached were no records, but points were awarded for the fastest times (as were for the Funny Cars, Pro Stocks, Pro Bikes etc) which count toward the championship.
The fastest run for a top fuel dragster on Saturday, 15 October was 3.93 seconds for the 1,000-ft (304m) with a speed of 293 mph (471 km/h).
The fuel they burn is so toxic that the crews, when they get ready to start up the engine to check it out wear full face mask with breathing apparatus.
We were watching the individual teams start up their engines. They are very noisy, even in idle, and almost instantly our eyes were stinging from the fumes and I am sure it wasn't good for the lungs either.
The engines are so loud and so powerful when they run the 1,000-ft that the ground and ones chest shakes from the power.

SUPERB WORK
Pure picture of pure physics at work... why so long, well it's all about leverage and creating maximum traction for those slick back tyres by weight transfer.
Very cool capture and great information!!
