Description
...The 'L' (also written, "L", El, EL, or L) (from "elevated") is the rapid transit system serving the city of Chicago and some of its surrounding suburbs.
...the steel shown here is just one small segment of the support system that suspends the 'L's track above city streets.
...for those of you that like details, here's a few more for you concerning this unique heavy-rail system that first opened for business in June 1892. Click Here

very wonderful
Oh, what a familiar sight; seen through non-Chicago eyes, it actually looks kinda nice in that heavy metal sort of way. The rivets are so...well...riveting and that shade of yellow actually looks like a color. It's gonna be winter soon and so it's going to take on that colorless, washed out look. I love the lines in this and the way the El looks so different when not shown in it's fully, oddly-jagged serpentine manner. When I think of the parts of Chicago that I like, I think of that bulky, heavy, almost oppressive El architecture. It resists beautification, and thus attains its own breed of grace and beauty. It's a surviving remnant of the Old Chicago, and it's so welcome--at least to me. But then I think that a city like Chicago suffers when it's cleaned up too much. I mean, how clean and pretty should you make a swamp city named after skunk cabbage and wild onions? This shot alone does Chicago an immense bit of justice, and it's a great fragment of the Windy City...something Jake and Elwood, Mr. Capone, and other colorful characters would recognize and love. This is a great shot. I love the angle and the absence of pigeon drops.
cool compo and tones. very 3D
Very cool capture!!
This is very riveting Bill, nice bit of engineering!!
wowwww....that is some errection
A reallly beautiful construction and so well preserved. Lovely capture.
This would make a great lino-cut!
Nice shot Bill! These structures look very plain from a distance but become more and more complicated as you get closer.
Awesome shot.
Wonderful composition! I like the pattern that's formed by those rivets you love so much. Excellent framing and pov. It's like being there!
So complicated! I would not know where to start.. lol But of course a very famous part of Chicago.. Interesting close up shot, looks like a maze from this angle! Good shot Bill.. take care both of you.. Rob
Very cool shot, Bill
Detalles y color perfectos. Wonderful composition
Amazing I say. Incredible structure here!
Bet that took a lot of work putting together!!!
Great image Hugs Susan~
This is one heck of a cool abstract, Bill! Talk about angles - and depth! Wow! This has it all! I love photos with lots of detail - as long as the composition is good - and this one goes right off the scale of coolness! Brilliant!
A very clear capture of this massive construction. It must be a massive system.
The only parts of it that I've seen were rusty, not this lovely bright yellow. I've always loved that steel riveted construction, and this big shape is wonderful. Great capture!
Great POV--all that metal and heavy stuff makes for a very cool shot!!
stunning image
GREAT SHOT
Love this composition...surfaces, lines and angles. Have just viewed your gallery back to AUG and really admire your work
excellent capture Bill.
Great detail shot. Have to use this for reference!
Sweet link and the "Intramural Railway 1893" Wiki photo was very interesting. I bet nobody ever fell out with those open sided cars. Amazing condition. The Boston "T" elevated paint is all peeling. Dana
