Description
Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell, of the clock, at the north end, of the Palace of Westminster, in London, and is generally extended to refer to the clock or the clock tower as well. It is the largest four-faced chiming clock and the third tallest free standing clock tower in the world. It celebrated its 150th anniversary on May 31, 2009. The clock was finished being built, on April 10, 1858. The clock tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England. The present Clock Tower was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of October 16, 1834. It is 316 feet (96.3 meters high), roughly 16 stories. The bottom 200 feet (61 meters) of the Clock Tower's structure consists of brickwork with sand colored Anston limestone cladding. The remainder of the tower's height is a framed spire of cast iron. Despite being one of the world's most famous tourist attractions, the interior of the tower is not open to overseas visitors, though UK residents are able to arrange tours (well in advance) through their Member of Parliament. However, the tower has no lift, so those escorted must climb the 393 limestone stairs to the top. To the left of the Clock Tower is Westminster Hall, containing both houses of Parliament but is officially a royal palace. Another rainy, foggy day in London. Info from UK Tourist web site and Wikipedia. 1995 photo scanned.

Wow!! I caught this quick!! :) :) This is great!! I will probably never get there!!
What's nice is normally I'd never have gotten to see something like outside of a text book...but thanks to you and your traveling ways not only do I get to see an actual photo but you go and take the time to give us some really detailed info on it to boot...Thanks Dana for giving some of us the opportunity to see things that other wise would have not have gotten to enjoy without someone like yourself taking the time to do so.. Always Enjoy your Captures!...

It's years since I walked around London but seeing your pictures makes me think I should do the tourist thing and see more of Big Ben than a fleeting glimpse from my van window as I drive past. Nice POV .
This is a lovely shot of this iconic tower Dana. You would think that when the bell strikes it would be deafening but the sound comes over soft and low!
What a super shot! I love the textures at the lower end of the frame.
Awesome view- thanks for sharing! :)

That is a pretty imposing tower Dana. Archeologists in the future may assume we worshipped a time god, which in a way I guess we do.
