Description
I've been re-working my M-130 model now that I'm a bit more comfortable with Shade. I've got a Wake Island re-enactment in mind for this baby...
In service for just 10 years, beginning in 1935, Pan-Am's Martin M-130 flying boats put in sterling service in peacetime and in war. Only three were built, Hawaii Clipper, Philippine clipper and China Clipper- with the latter soon lending its name to all of Pan-Am's flying boat fleet.
Attrition, and casualties were high. In July 1938, Hawaii Clipper vanished enroute to the Philippines- its loss remains unexplained. In January 1943, Philippine Clipper, (which had a few years earlier miraculously survived the first air-raid on Wake Island), hit a mountain in bad weather on approach to San Francisco. Two years later, with the end of the war in sight, China Clipper broke up while landing in the West Indies.
When the guns finally fell silent in the Pacific in mid-1945, it was to be a Pacific without "Clippers."
