Description
This shot was taken yesterday at the Royal International Tattoo at RAF Fairford, near my Home in Swindon.. This will be the start in a series, so Aviation Photography has been a new challenge for me! Despite serving for a long time in the Royal Air Force, this was my first Airshow.
The Boeing Chinook is a tandem rotor helicopter operated by the Royal Air Force. A series of variants based on the United States Army's Boeing CH-47 Chinook, the RAF Chinook fleet is the largest outside the United States.
When I was in the RAF I trained to be a Specialist field Nurse, and was attached to the Squadron at RAF Odiham, but fortunately for me never had to see active service which the role would require, and so never had any conflict with the usual non-combat role. However, RAF Chinooks have seen extensive service including fighting in the Falklands War, peace-keeping commitments in the Balkans, and action in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Super shot of this whirlly bird Danny it looks great..
That is one amazing capture Danny, very nice job for sure
Nicely done Danny. Its a bird, its a plane, its a fish (Chinook salmon);-) Really looking forward to this series. And 500mm...must have been fun on a tripod with Wimberly.
A superb shot. Looking forward to your new series. CC
Nice shot of this beast. Bill unfortunately beat me to the salmon joke!
I used to know these as wokka-wokkas because of the distinct noise they make. They always impress when seen in the air. I don't know why but this looks like something out of a computer game to me. My company (Rolls-Royce) had a strong presence at RIAT this year I believe.
You don't see one of these every day - very well shot with the narrow aperature showing all the details! I'll look forward to seeing the rest of the series mate!
Great shot and it bring back memories. Flew with the sivil version to the North Sea several times.
Awesome bird of pray! ;)
terrific capture
Absolutely stunning image. Wow. The detail is incredible! A most excellent way to begin a new endeavor.
Excellent! The high fstop made for a nice star effect on the helicopter lights and created a nice deep blue sky....and the relatively slow shutter speed works for the feeling of movement in the blades...i suppose if you used a faster shutter speed it would have been too dark....perfect settings here apparently!
A super action capture and they are hard to get as they move so fast.
Wow! Different kind of bird! Great job!
Great shot, love the clearity- thanks for sharing! :-)
