Description
The Bukit Peninsula is the southernmost point of Bali. This is a large limestone peninsula, which is connected to the rest of Bali by a narrow isthmus just south of the airport. It is rugged and dry, and prior to tourist development was a real backwater area of Bali. The Bukit (as it is commonly referred to) includes the famous cliff-hanging temple at Uluwatu, a number of Bali's very best beaches, and the top surfing spots on the island. It was the surfers who opened the eyes of the world to this part of the island.
Uluwatu Temple (Pura Uluwatu) is one of Bali's nine key temples and dates from the 11th Century. Even more remarkable than the temple itself is its location, perched on a steep cliff 200 feet (70 meters) above the Indian Ocean. When I visited the site it seemed deserted. Aside from the temple and a small warung selling cold drinks and snacks to the Australian surfers, there was nothing but open ground. The area has since become a tourist Mecca complete with comfortable resorts, restaurants and entry fees for the temple.

Ah. Civilization marches on relentlessly. Starbucks opens next week no doubt.
It is a beautiful spot and these are lovely captures.
full of interest as much from the text as the pictures, nicely put together
Beautiful place and captures! How marvelous to stroll around it largely on your own. I hope they are protecting it as they profit from its beauty. Very interesting narrative.
Any plans to go back and revisit the area. Just think you don't have to carry all those rolls of film this time. :)
