Description
I have, at times, been forced to adhere to dress codes, first in school and later at work. But a dress code for an entire country?
Indonesia has a schizophrenic approach to a person's attire, especially in resort areas. You could find topless women on Kuta Beach and pictures of scantily clad young women along side of the posters I found on the wall of one of Poppies cottages.
The first poster warns; "It is suggested that you do not wear these dresses when visiting governmental offices and we do not want to help you if you dress improperly."
The second poster offers the following helpful suggestions; "It is suggested that you dress properly when visiting governmental offices and we do want to help you if you dress properly."
There was a rumor when I was there about a young woman who had come back from the beach wearing only her bikini to find that someone had stolen everything from her room and she could not find any official to help her.

Well, at least they tell you right out what their biases are and how you can get around them! Wow. Nicely put together! I'm glad you thought to take pictures of these posters all those years ago. They're particularly jaw-dropping today!
There will always be people telling other people how to live their lives. I recently read a 'suggested dress' article for the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, where I worked for 37 years. I found it embarrassing, the things they suggested. It would be more appropriate for a funeral home. They also scorned tattoos and piercings. Made me wonder if they ever leave their offices and go out to interact with students? Not all tattoo owners are criminals, and piercings are a personal choice in my opinion. One of my most interesting and successful female students had major metal all over her face. She was a beautiful person with a mind far ahead of most of her peers. Pardon my rant!
I agree totally with above comment if people went about there own business and left others alone and stop sitting judging others this world would be a far better place superb work !!
Fascinating! I was teased all my youth for being a beatnik, and then again by my pupils for being a hippie.. I have often been tempted to purchase a T-shirt that says....'I'll wear what I want' but I'm not keen on Tshirts! I am thrilled to have a stream of young student lodgers who inspire and brighten with the way they dress..magic.
This sight will increase the sales of tranquilizers and / or Viagra.
yeah if cultures clashes together. Nowadays not more this strict, but at the most (all?) religious places in Asia you can only enter appropriate... but guess we wouldn't enter our churches also not in hot pants and bikini top .... and I thinks this is not the worst. As much as i like to see (half) naked girls it doesn't fit for all locations (around the beach OK...but a supermarket in the city ?) I myself don't feel comfortable when i have to enter offices in my sleeveless t-shirts i wear usually when on the road/in the nature.
I say: 'when in Rome - do as the Romans do' ... While also holidaying in Bali, I attended plenty of outdoor festivals and had been handed a Sarong to wear over my shorts, no big deal - far from it, it's nice to blend in with the locals and shows some respect for other cultures. (Ms. Bossie Boots, you totally missed the point) It's good to have a sense of humour, Mark BB
Good show of how people thought what was important back then
stunning collage, great work! LOL!
I am begging you, please tell me you took pictures at Kuta Beach lol. great story to go along with the posters, we are so lucky to live where we do
rules what point sometimes does it really make but a smile warm hugs, Linda
The world is beautiful because it is different, my dear Mark! It seems to me that basically, they have not big claims, I find the right clothing properly on occasion. A beautiful collage to illustrate what you've told, I think you are a very special guide!
I remember the day back then and earlier, Great images
Well, it's nice that it's laid out in plain language anyway. When Leslie and I were in Rome we never got to the Vatican, partly because we weren't sure what the dress restrictions were. It was hot, and we kept putting it off. Of course the day spent rescuing two kittens factored in a bit too. Great flash back to an earlier time. I wonder if there are still interesting dress code posters there now. I'm sure there are still such calendars. It doesn't look like she is REALLY going for a bike ride. Excellent captures!
LOL at Randys comment... it was interesting to read everyones take on this. Nice work.
