Description
A long time ago I read an article about personal space. Westerners keep a comfort zone of three feet between themselves and strangers. My Chinese friend assures me that this is not the case for most Asians. Indonesians have a personal space of one foot so it can be somewhat unnerving when speaking to someone you have just met. It also makes it more difficult to resist a sales pitch.
Due to my inexperience, it wasn’t long before I agreed to let these two gentlemen take me on a shopping and sightseeing trip. For 2,500 rupiah ($6.25 USD) they would drive me around for about half a day. What a bargain! It wasn’t until two years later that I learned what you have probably already guessed. That bargain price came with strings attached. Everything I purchased that day had a 30% surcharge attached to it which was given to my companions as a finder’s fee. As the old saying goes, “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” On the plus side, the Chevy Impala was a sweet ride.

I love this shot, it seems that their cloths fit the car, cool capture
Oh boy ... they look pretty slick to me! LOL! You can't win 'em all!
they sure can smile wonderful capture warm hugs, Linda
I recently bought a pair of linen flares like those.... What fun you must have had...
This kind of car you don't see any more on the streets of Bali ...... but the commission is still around. the $6.25 USD exchange is now over 50000 Rp. instead of 2500Rp. but buys you the same value thank you for the time machine .... keep them coming
Ah yes, memories coming back - all those relatives they have, who sell Silver, Batik or Woodcarvings etc. - poor tourists ... I had to laugh, sorry Mark - a couple of real Spunkettes there ! thanks BB
Amazing looking car thanks for sharing your stories of your travels superb work !
Very interesting and fun chapter in your trip
Two types of funny and cool bargains price/deal. Something you do not forget!
Nice shot - I like the colors and your composition a lot.
Oh well, looks like you had a great time anyway!!
Very interesting story , Mark !
WONDERFUL STORY AND IMAGE
They look experienced at what they do and relaxed. There is a hint of predator in their eyes though. lol. Well I know you got some great stuff by the pics I haven't commented on yet, so good came out of it. Great photo! Nice composition and depth. I like the curve of the tree line. I've claimed a lot more than one foot of personal space. I've even planted a flag and all.
Looks like you were taken, but what an experince that must have been. They look almost like an Asian version of Starsky and Hutch..
