Description
On January 18, 1911 Eugene Ely flying the Curtiss-Ely Pusher, made the first shipboard arrested landing on the cruiser 'U.S.S. Pennsylvania' in San Francisco Bay, starting Naval Aviation.
This full-scale replica of the original Curtiss Pusher was built by Bob Coolbaugh, with the assistance of Andrew King, a well-known antique and vintage aircraft restorer. It took them nearly two years to complete.
A few concessions to the modern era were made, as the airplane will be operating cross-country and occasionally has to land at controlled airports.
Concessions include a 1947 six cylinder Continental 125hp engine turning a Sterba 74x40 propeller. It also includes disc brakes, a transponder, starter and a Garmin Aera GPS.
Piloting the aircraft for a deomonstration flight at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum's 21st Annual World War II Weekend and 'Gathering of Warbirds' is second pilot Andrew King. The hoses he is wearing around his chest and under his arms are bicycle inner tubes that were used by Edward Ely as life preservers during the first landing on U.S.S. Pennsylvania'.

This is just so cool looking! I bet that this is a blast to fly Thanks for sharing
Very nice shot and great info sig.
Holy crap! This reminds me of the time I got to fly in a two-seater ultralight. Nothing between you and the rest of the world but a bitty frame and a lawn mower engine! We landed in a very nice hay field, tyvm. No shipboard landings. Yikes! Excellent capture and narrative, my friend.
I'd be afraid of an arrested landing disassembling an aircraft of this design:) But fine photo on your part Sig! LOve the life preservers...I'm sure better than nothing.
