Description
Wednesday and Thursday were big surf days at the Wedge* in Newport Beach. Of course, I had to get down there to check it out. Only bodysurfers were in the water, and they have to be some of the craziest guys around. The waves were about 15', with a couple of 18 footers just for fun. Not as big as they can get, but I was plenty impressed!~!
*The Wedge (surfing)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wedge is a world-famous surfing and bodysurfing spot located at the extreme east end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. During a south swell of a particular size and direction, the Wedge can produce huge waves as spectacular and intimidating as any in Hawaii, Tahiti, or Australia. The wedge can produce waves up to 30 feet high.
The waves are a by-product of improvements to the groin (rock jetty) on the west side of the Newport Harbor entrance undertaken during the 1930s.[1] When conditions are just right, and the waves approach the shore at the proper angle (south swells), an approaching wave will reflect off the jetty creating a second wave. The reflected wave meets up with the following wave of the set and forms a peak. Because of this effect, waves at the wedge are often several feet larger than waves at other south-facing beaches in Newport on any given day.
The Wedge only breaks big when intense Southern Hemisphere storms or large tropical depressions, and hurricanes send their energy from the proper SSW direction, primarily during the summer & fall months.

Uhoh! Becareful Buddy! Nice capture. Aloha
Are yes the dirty old wedge!!!! You would never get me out there! I have a morbid fear of braking my neck!!!!!!!!! What a super shot. I've only been there a couple of times and never surfed it, but seeing body boarders getting pounded by waves as thick as they were high was enough for me. Plus every time I went, the weather was absolutely foul, with winds that take you a couple of miles down the coast quicker than you could say 'I need a chiropractor'! And there was a rock fight between standup surfers and body boarders in the shorebreak, which itself was about a mile high! Thanks so much for posting this. THE WAVE WITH NO ESCAPE!!
Cool!! Cool!! :)
Greta shot Marilyn thats some wave.. They are welcome to it lol..
Ah yes, I remember the dirty nasty Wedge from the sixties. I think the phrase "death wish" was coined for people who surfed it. Stellar image Marilyn. You missed your calling. You could have been a photographer for Bruce Brown.
Astonishing and extremely scary! BRILLIANT pic.
Wonderful capture
Brilliant!
This is just beautiful, awesome shot
Ahh, I haven't heard about the wedge since high school...the boys used to duck out of school when the waves were big and head over to try their skill. Fantastic shot!
Good heavens!
Great shot. I saw something in the newspaper about how big the waves at the Wedge were going to be. I was going to take a spin up there, but got lazy.
WOW! Oh wow! I wouldn't do that. There's just something inherently spooky about water that's up to 30 feet tall and moving on top of that, but still, it makes for an impressive photo. What a shot this is, and I love that intense color!
I'd try that...well, maybe when I was a few years younger:)
Amazing action shot Marilyn. Beautiful color in the water. Dana
