Description
This is one of our native species of owls, and nocturnal hence not often seen, unless disturbed in the day while roosting in a tree.
Long eared owls are long-eared only in name. Their upright appendages described as tufts, and science seems unclear about their purpose. Some say they are pure decoration, others as a means of communication or to make them appear larger, I tend to favour the latter, nature seldom wastes her energy in creating things for nothing!
They have an expansive range throughout Europe, over much of North America and across Asia. Typically they inhabit dense vegetation and open forest, and are ferocious predators, swooping down on their prey and dispatching it by crushing the skull before swallowing the animal whole.
