Description
...Liked the look of these, but
...after expending a modest amount of energy looking for any form of beehive shaped fungi in the Pacific Northwest [USA], I cannot identify these...
...anyone know the name or have an educated guess?
...also from out on Whidbey Island, Washington.
Bill

Hmm, all I can say is that there seems to be a fungus among us!!
Fantastic capture!!
I haven't got the faintest idea - but I would like to christen them 'stack of pancakes' - now, pass the Maple syrup, if you please ! LOL BB
nice one... shame im the wrong sort of fun guy
Haven't a clue Bill but it's a super shot.
Lol like pancakes or burger buns lol.. Nice shot Bill don't know fungi either!!
Look in the mirror - there is a Fun Guy! My search has not revealed any like this - maybe a group of Bracket fungi... Clive
Clive is close this belong to the bracket fungi kind. Has so many sub species is not funny. Wonderful capture.
These must be the multi-stack sandwich fungus, often briefly seen in lunchboxes on building sites in the UK. The spores must have somehow got blown across the pond.
Wow, I'm not very knowledgeable about fungi, but they sure look nice. I love that warm rich tan color, it contrasts so nicely with the lush greens of the moss and plants.
I have never seen anything quite like this, what a strange and wonderful find!
WELL, if you cant se that this is Pita fungi...... ;) WOW! they are amazing. Have never see fungi stacked like this. They are so beautiful and perfect.
Great capture, Bill no idea
Ha... there are over 100,000 types of fungus. Some we eat (called mush rooms. I wonder why?), others give us itchy athletes foot (and worse), others are good for nothing (for us, at least). These are quite unique. But, I don't know what type they are, either. All I can do is agree with beachzz's old pun. Really interesting photo. Any more fun oddities in you nook of the woods? Keep up the good work! :-)
Looks like Chinese lanterns, no that not the name it's just what they look like to me. :D Can't find it in the book, but the book only has 700 of the ones in North America and they say there are 1.4 million different types world wide. Excellent find and capture! :D
They are unusual, they look as though they are holding the trunk up!!!
A very interesting shot. I've never such fungus before.
great shot
I thought pancakes, too. :) Gorgeous shot! Such a lovely little corner of the woods.
Well, this a cool one! And no mate, i really can't help you with an ID.. Looks kinda like a sprig on a truck lol Good shot... Rob
Lovely, never seen these before.
Wow - not sure what you've discovered here, Bill, but they do look cool! Maybe you should return at night and see if they light up... They do look like lanterns! Very cool discovery!
EHI, THEY LOOK STACKS OF PANCAKES!
I don't know anything about fungi Now flowers thats another category all together Looks interesting tho and Andrea answered it for ya stackhouse fungi:) Hugs Susan~
Top notch shot of the mystery growth and environs, Bill. Of all people, I would think durleybeachbum would know the identity of this peculiar variety, Bill. Perhaps the spores hitched a ride on a meteorite on its way to our planet. In that vein, I wonder if fungi have any relation to the Ferengi, of Star Trek notoriety.
These little fungi look wonderful clinging to the underside of this log. A super capture.
If you do not know what they are do not eat them. that all i know so i buy my in the store cool image
This one reminds me of pancakes.... Very interesting...Aloha
me too wonderful capture warm hugs, Linda
100,000 types of fungus? wow can you imagine having the job of coming up with names for each of those, the interesting things you learn on this site are quite a treat, nice work!
