Description
Shane is a certified tour guide in the Bermudian Landing Community Baboon Sanctuary. According to my driver, he is 'the best'. Shane is intimately familiar with a family of eight or nine Black Howler Monkeys that live along the banks of the Belize River in the sanctuary. According to him, it took him several years to earn their trust to the point that he could coax them from the tree tops so they could be hand feed if so desired.
I did not ask, but I suspected, that Shane is college educated. He seems to have extensive knowledge of the environment and the issues of protection and preservation of flora and fauna.
He took us along a trail through secondary rain forest while he was explaining what creatures inhabit this area and what is possible to see at a night excursion.
Shane is a Rastafarian or Rasta. Rasta is a not highly organized monotheistic, new religious movement that believes in Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia,(1930-1936 and 1941-1974) as god incarnate.
The rasta movement started among poor Jamaicans of African descent in Jamaica in the 1930s. The movement was spread through the reggae music of Bob Marley and others.
Shane is a vegetarian and does not drink.
