Description
This is a partial view of the Temple of the Masonry Altars. The jade-head sculpture of Kinich Ahau was found inside this temple. The giant head of the Sun God, standing 6 inches in diameter and weighing 10 pounds is the largest Mayan-era jade carving ever discovered.
Kinich Ahau was also known by by the name Ah Xoc Kin, who was associated with poetry and music. Kinich Ahau was the patron god of the city Itzamal. Kinich Ahau is usually shown with jaguar-like features.

What a gorgeous and evocative shot! I love the way ancient things tend to also look vaguely alien...well, in a sense they are, as they're generally from cultures so completely unlike anything us allegedly modern folks are familiar with. I love the sense of scale in this and the details are superb.
