Description
This is the world’s best preserved meteorite impact site, just minutes from Interstate 40, in the Northern Arizona desert. Meteor Crater is the breath-taking result of a collision between a piece of an asteroid traveling at 26,000 miles per hour and planet Earth approximately 50,000 years ago. It had the force of more than 20 million tons of TNT. The Meteor Crater is nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) across, 2.4 miles in circumference and 570 feet (170 meters) deep. The nickel-iron meteorite is buried thousands of feet below and estimated to be the size of a railroad freight car. Sorry about the lens glare. Info from Meteor Crater web site. Photo taken in Spring of 1996 and scanned.
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments.
They are very much appreciated.

glad we were not around then, can only imagine the devistation. thanks for sharing this great shot Dana.. Steve
Cool capture! I agree there are some events best not viewed live!!!!
I love this place and have yet to get there. It's eroding, you know, and so it's not as deep as it once was and it'll be shallower when I finally DO get there, even if I get there tomorrow. Now all of that aside, this is a fantastic shot. I love impact craters and this IS the great granddaddy of them all...Okay, there's that one in the Gulf of Mexico that's bigger and visible from orbit, but it doesn't even look like a crater any more since its under water. So yeah, this is the whompin' big great granddaddy of all terrestrial impact craters. (There are 9 of them in Estonia, but they're little pipsqueaks compared to this.) Okay, and onto the shot itself. It's fantastic and the lens flare actually adds to it, giving you a sense of "you are there" which is something I love. This is a fantastic shot!
Superb clarity, color, depth, texture and lighting in this shot of the awesome crater, Dana, taken from virtually the same spot I took pictures from when I visited this site way back in 1988. My footprints are undoubtably long gone by now. I have lots of film photos of this huge hole/excavation, sitting somewhere in my closet.
A fabulous shot again dear Dana, splendid work!
wonderful capture!! i see it on tv, but i wish to see live!! :)
A railroad freight car. I instinctively imagined it to be much bigger but I guess it was going super fast. It reminds me of the Wolf creek crater that they made a movie about!
I can't begin to wrap my mind around how this happened. Simply incredible!!
I can only imagine the impact.... Interesting shot. Aloha
wow.. like you are on the Moon !!! only the plants give it away that this is in the state that was in the news so bad and sad lately thanks for the possitive look on it again Photo from 1996 .. i wounder how it looks now
Impressive!
Great capture! And it was a relatively small meteorite! ;o)
Lovely shot and great info.
That's amazing. I would love to see it in person.
You really need to stop your dog from digging these holes...I mean really...rofl...Scene this in the early 80's on one of my road trips..It's mind blowing once your actually standing on the rim...the pictures like the one you took does not give it enough justice until you actually stand where you were standing...I'm sure you'll agree... Amazing Shot Dana!!
YES SIR...BIG ROCK FALL THERE 50 000 YEARS AGO...WHEN THAT AREA WAS AN INSIDE OCEAN ;-)
MAGNIFICENT shot/scene/narrative! (Reminds this DUMB old man about how we 'humans' THINK we're so Intelligent and can control things. Or, as T.P. says OFTEN, THIS is OVER HIS PAY GRADE!). WINK.
amazing picture
It's a fantastic place, great capture! :)
Wow, that's really impressive! I like the lens flare myself...
That is one huge crater, great capture!!!!
WONDERFUL SHOT! I WAS THERE YEARS AGO
It must have made a huge blast eh! An excellent capture of this amazing event. Even after all that time the crater is still huge.
